At the 2020 Punk Scholars Network international conference, Olivier Berube-Sasseville from Canada, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), presented a paper “Skinheads de France : Les années d’acier (1983-1993).” It turned out that not by any means all skinheads in France then were neo-fascists, while the majority of neo-fascists were not skinheads.
In 2021, Dutch filmmaker Sunny Bergman made a documentary, shown on national TV, called Samenzwevers. It is about persons with New Age religious views voting for Dutch extreme right party FVD.
Ms Bergman interviewed such a voter. The voter said: ‘They say that FVD leader Thierry Baudet is a neonazi. That cannot be true. Because he uses lavender perfume. And he likes classical music. He is definitely not a skinhead, so I can vote for him …’ A disastrous consequence of equating all skinheads with all neo-fascists. Arguably, the moment a skinhead becomes a nazi, he ceases being a skinhead. He becomes a bonehead.
