The Punk Scholars Network Canada and United States conference on November 18, 2022 continued after the contribution by Katie Brown on Queer and Transnational Feminist Punk Performance in San José, Costa Rica.
As second speaker in the first panel, moderated by Ellen Bernard, came Erik Gustafson of the University of South Dakota, with Please (don’t) kill me: Punk music, presence, and possibilities for the digital era.
Based on the book Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain.
Then came Joseph D. Bryan – “Oh my fucking God, it’s almost Fourth of July”: Confronting the Past to Overcome the Present. About how history is mentioned in punk. Like in Crass’ Where Next Columbus.
Or in the album Hex by Poison Girls. Bryan said that the title refers to the persecution of women as ‘witches’.
